According to the Data Processing Center, the maritime security report contains information that 458 incidents occurred at sea in the first half of 2021, 42 cases of theft, piracy and robbery were recorded.
Maritime accidents most often occur with vessels with a low freeboard that are slow moving. Certain criminal gangs operate in Singapore whose prey become barges and tugs, bulk carriers and tankers. In Manila and Jakarta, burglars prefer container ships, bulk carriers and anchored tankers.
IFC predicts an increase in the number of maritime incidents in the second half of 2021 because demand for Christmas and New Year holiday products increases at this time of the year.
